I'm Chrome— also known as Chromemonger on Twitter. I am an afro-boricua freelance artist located in the United States.
My parents had a healthy affection for Hispanic art and artists, books with works by Frida Khalo, Diego Rivera, Francisco Goya, and Diego Velázquez. But, with an older brother by ten years, I grew up watching the same shows he did, giving me early access to anime and comic books— both of which became early inspirations.
Growing up mixed race and black in america, I quickly realized a void in my favorite media involving any character or influence that doesn't pass the paperbag test. Junior year of High School, I decided to make stories of color my main focus, highlighting the cultures and people usually disregarded by Eurocentric art curriculums. I strive to knit the aesthetics of my ancestry and cultures more and more into my work— as personal projects as well as professional jobs.
A firm fan in all things strange and weird, I love immersing myself in horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres. My contemporary inspirations taken from Yoshihiro Togashi, Chase Conley, Hiromasa Ogura, Satoshi Kon, Aaron Douglas, Nnedi Okorafor, Deb JJ Lee, the works of Guillermo del Toro, and Henry Sellick. I want to contribute to the art world and community with works that reimagine and reintroduce black aesthetics and culture where there is little found.
In 2020, I joined a group of TTRPG creatives and rolled out a Charity Dungeons and Dragons Zine called The Book of Lost Magicka and you can buy it right here and download it with a Pay What You Want.
